An Interview with Fly Fisherman DJ Davis – Powered by 8Fans
For DJ Davis, fly fishing isn't just a hobby—it's a passion that started in a quiet stream near home and grew into a lifelong pursuit. In this interview, DJ shares how he got started, the gear he trusts (including his go-to waders and boots from 8Fans), and the valuable lessons he’s learned along the way. His journey reflects dedication, curiosity, and the deep joy of connecting with nature through fishing.
It started with a small stocked trout stream near my home where I’d spin fish whenever I could. Over time, the challenge faded, and I craved something deeper. That’s when fly fishing caught my attention—it offered complexity and immersion that I was looking for.
Ironically, around the same time I was researching fly rods, my local community held a fishing day raffle. My wife, knowing how badly I wanted to start fly fishing, entered and won an Orvis Encounter fly rod combo. That moment kickstarted my journey. Her support—and later my kids’—fueled my love for the sport.
You actually don’t need much to get started—less than most people think. Here's my Top 7 Essentials:
Fly Rod – A 9' 5wt rod is a versatile and forgiving starting point.
Landing Net – Use a rubber net for trout to reduce stress on the fish.
Basic Flies – Start simple: bead head wooly buggers and egg patterns.
Leaders – Understanding tippet sizes and leader structure is key.
Nippers & Forceps – Essential for clean line cuts and safe hook removal.
Waders – I personally recommend 8Fans triple-layer chest waders. They're durable, reinforced at the knees, and feature gravel guards and large pockets.
Wading Boots – Good boots are a game-changer. I use 8Fans boots for their grip and support, especially on long outings.
While I prefer not to "spot burn," my favorite places are the quiet, untouched creeks and streams—where the water is clean, the trails are unmarked, and nature remains undisturbed.
It’s all about practice. Start in your backyard. Work on wrist movement, timing, and line control. Once you're on the water, read the water carefully—seams, runs, and slack zones dictate success. Apply your mechanics to match the water and conditions.
Fly selection grows with experience. I started with egg patterns and wooly buggers. Then I dove into entomology—learning to match the hatch and present flies that mimic natural behavior. Right now, I’m exploring nymph fishing more deeply. My biggest advice? Don’t be afraid to go against the grain and experiment.
Most “mistakes” are really just part of the learning process. But here are a few I see often:
Casting errors – Snapping the line, skipping the back pause, or using too much body.
Poor water entry – Splashing too much, standing too close, or casting shadows on the water.
Be mindful, and you’ll improve with every outing.
Reading water is the golden key. Use a mix of resources—videos, books, and conversations—but nothing beats field experience. Look for structure, movement, and fish behavior, then adapt your approach.
Catching my first Lake-Run Steelhead was unforgettable. I went with my childhood best friend, and after hours of trying, I finally hooked one on the tenth cast. The moment he sprinted through knee-deep water with the net is etched in my memory forever. It wasn’t just about the fish—it was about the journey and the people you share it with.
Honestly, the only thing that changes for me is what I wear. I’ve fished in snow, heat, and everything in between. The biggest challenge in winter? Frozen guides. For that, I just come prepared—and stay patient.
Use your resources—YouTube, books, shop talk—but most importantly, get out and fish. Apply what you learn, experiment without fear, and see mistakes as opportunities. Growth comes from time on the water.
DJ Davis’s story is a powerful reminder that fly fishing is about more than technique—it’s about the experience, the challenges, and the people who support us along the way. From first casts to unforgettable catches, DJ’s journey shows how patience, passion, and the right gear can turn a simple stream into a lifelong adventure.
